The outdated way of perceiving elected politicians as liberal vs. conservative is totally misleading. Politicians these days are far more logically perceived as libertarian vs. progressive socialist. This is made clear by the Liberty Index published by Professor Clifford F. Thies.

Based on votes in the U.S. House of Representatives, the vast majority of Republican members fall in the libertarian quadrant, while the vast majority of Democratic members of the House fall in the Progressive Socialist quadrant.
